Who We Are
CleanAirKits is a family business with roots in the UK, inspired by a legacy of innovation and hands-on problem solving. We combine high-quality enclosures with industry-leading CoolerMaster PC fans. Growing up inspired by MacGyver and weekend trips to electronics stores and makerspaces, we’ve built complex, world-changing technologies, but we’re equally thrilled by scrappy techniques to defeat airborne pathogens.
Most of all, having witnessed long-term disability in our families first-hand, we are dedicated to creating multiple layers of protection that slow the spread of debilitating diseases such as measles, strep, TB, and Long COVID. Our goal is to economically double or triple indoor air change rates, noticeably improving health in homes, schools, and offices across the UK and Europe.
CleanAirKits emerged from an online community of engineers worldwide who experimented with RGB fans paired with less stringent filters in the summer of 2022. As mask mandates were lifted, we became obsessed with the potential for children’s classrooms to be as safe as outdoors. We asked ourselves: what if indoor air cleaning could be quiet, affordable, and efficient?
Partner Rob Wissmann meticulously built a CADR lab to measure how effectively PC fans pulled air through MERV13 filters. To his delight, he discovered significant advantages in noise reduction and energy efficiency compared with equivalent-CADR retail HEPA purifiers. Partner Wayne Westerman, PhD, a National Academy of Inventors fellow with three decades of experience in startups, tech, and product design, transformed this breakthrough into compact, quiet, snap-together kits. Partner Scott Westerman, a master machinist with four decades of experience, organised kit packaging and assembly with family and local craftspeople.
CleanAirKits uniquely bridges the gap between homebrew DIY and mass manufacturing. Our designs use simple, replaceable parts and maker-friendly fabrication techniques available worldwide. Our social media accounts showcase the latest homebuilt designs, and our published articles guide the DIY community toward optimal fan and filter combinations.
We brought legitimacy to the DIY air cleaner movement by funding the first official Intertek CADR testing of MERV13 Corsi-Rosenthal boxes and achieving the first UL507 Electrical Safety certification for PC fan purifiers. (See our FAQ for testing and certification results!) We are grateful to Jim Rosenthal for his global leadership and advice in setting up the business, and we donate a portion of sales to the Corsi-Rosenthal Foundation, supporting access to clean indoor air for disadvantaged communities.
