The Science of Our Purifiers
Luggable air purifiers use a fundamentally different approach to filtration — one validated by Energy Star laboratories, EPA research and HouseFresh independent testing. This page explains exactly why our design outperforms traditional HEPA purifiers on every metric that matters.
Why MERV13 outperforms HEPA for home air purification
The air purifier industry has long defaulted to HEPA filters as the gold standard. But HEPA is a standard designed for laboratory and hospital environments — not everyday homes. Here's what the science actually shows.
The filtration efficiency comparison
MERV13 filters capture 98%+ of particles 0.3–1.0 microns — the size range that includes viruses, bacteria, fine particulates (PM2.5) and allergens. A properly loaded MERV13 filter achieves filtration efficiency indistinguishable from HEPA in real-world home conditions.
Crucially, the EPA's own research on CR Box designs (the design Luggables are based on) found that a MERV13 CR Box achieves 97% bio-aerosol removal within 30 minutes in a standard bedroom. This exceeds the measured performance of most sealed HEPA units tested in the same conditions.
| Metric | Luggable MERV13 | Typical HEPA Brand |
|---|---|---|
| Particle capture (0.3–1µm) | 97–99% | 99.97% (lab spec) |
| Real-world bioaerosol removal (30 min) | 97% | ~85–93% |
| Annual filter cost | £15–20 (standard 3M) | £50–£100 (proprietary) |
| Filter availability | Any hardware store | Manufacturer only |
| Filter standardisation | MERV rating (independent) | Brand-specific claims |
PC fan technology: the efficiency breakthrough
Traditional air purifiers use centrifugal blower fans — the same fans found in vacuum cleaners. These are high-RPM, high-noise motors optimised for short bursts of high static pressure. Luggable purifiers use Cooler Master Mobius PC fans instead — and the difference is profound.
Why PC fans change everything
PC fans are engineered by the computer industry to run continuously for 100,000+ hours (over 11 years non-stop) with minimal noise and minimal power draw. They operate on low-voltage DC power, making them exceptionally efficient. They are designed specifically for sustained airflow — exactly what air purification requires.
The Energy Star proof
Energy Star's 2026 "Most Efficient" designation is awarded only to products that score in the top tier on Clean Air Delivery Rate per watt (CADR/W) — the definitive efficiency metric. The Luggable Ultra XL achieved 26 CFM per watt, tested by Intertek Laboratories. The industry average for certified air purifiers is approximately 6 CFM/watt.
That's a 4× efficiency advantage over typical branded purifiers — which is why our running cost is approximately £2/year in the UK, versus £150–£300/year for equivalent airflow from a Dyson or Coway.
CADR: the only air purifier metric that matters
CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate — measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM) of cleaned air. It is the single most important performance metric for an air purifier, because it tells you exactly how much air the unit actually cleans, not just how powerful the fan is.
How to size your purifier using CADR
The ASHRAE 241 standard (2023) for clean air in occupied spaces recommends 5 air changes per hour (ACH) for residential use. Here's how that translates to room coverage:
| Room size | Recommended CADR | Luggable model |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom (100–180 sq ft) | 150–200 CFM | Luggable Standard (5-fan) |
| Living room (200–350 sq ft) | 250–350 CFM | Luggable Ultra XL (7-fan) |
| Open-plan (350–600 sq ft) | 350–500 CFM | Luggable Ultra XL (7-fan) |
| Office / classroom | 400–600 CFM | Multiple Ultra XL units |
A practical rule of thumb: one PC fan per room occupant. A 5-fan Luggable Standard is ideal for a single person's bedroom; the 7-fan Ultra XL covers families and larger spaces.
The noise science: why 39dB is a breakthrough
Traditional HEPA air purifiers operate between 55–70dB at maximum speed — equivalent to a normal conversation or a vacuum cleaner in the next room. At medium speeds (where most people run them), they still produce 45–55dB. That's why so many users simply switch them off at night.
Luggables operate at 39dB at normal running speed — quieter than a library, quieter than a whisper. This isn't marketing language; it's a direct consequence of the PC fan design. Cooler Master Mobius fans are acoustically engineered with fluid dynamic bearings and anti-vibration mounts.
The practical benefit: you'll actually keep it running. An air purifier running at 39dB 24/7 delivers vastly more clean air than a 65dB machine switched off for 8 hours every night.

The adjustable speed control
Our optional 12V DC adjustable speed controller gives you fine-grained control of airflow — from "Whisper Mode" (25dB, barely perceptible) to "Boost Mode" (maximum CADR for rapid air cleaning). This lets you run at whisper speed during sleep and boost to maximum when cooking, having guests, or after outdoor activities on high-pollen days.
