The Science of Our Purifiers

Luggable air purifiers use a fundamentally different approach to filtration — one validated by Energy Star laboratories, EPA research and HouseFresh independent testing. This page explains exactly why our design outperforms traditional HEPA purifiers on every metric that matters.

Why MERV13 outperforms HEPA for home air purification

The air purifier industry has long defaulted to HEPA filters as the gold standard. But HEPA is a standard designed for laboratory and hospital environments — not everyday homes. Here's what the science actually shows.

The filtration efficiency comparison

A MERV-13 filter captures particles down to 0.3 microns — pollen, dust and dust-mite debris, pet dander, smoke and mould spores, and the 0.3–1 micron band where viruses and fine PM2.5 sit. That is the size we quote everywhere on this site, and it is worth knowing why: 0.3 microns is the hardest size for any fibrous filter to catch. Smaller particles, viruses among them, are captured more readily, not less.

Single-pass efficiency is not the same thing as how clean a room gets, and the room is what you actually breathe. The EPA's own research on CR Box designs (the design Luggables are based on) found that a MERV13 CR Box achieves 97% bio-aerosol removal within 30 minutes in a standard bedroom — a room-level result over time, driven by how much air the unit moves. This exceeds the measured performance of most sealed HEPA units tested in the same conditions, because a dense filter that throttles airflow cleans a room more slowly.

What about HEPA filter costs? Proprietary HEPA filters from Dyson, Blueair or Coway cost £50–£100 to replace annually, and only the manufacturer sells them. Our 3M Filtrete MERV13 filters are a standard off-the-shelf size — from £58 a pair here, or buy them from any hardware store. You are never locked into our prices.

PC fan technology: the efficiency breakthrough

Traditional air purifiers use centrifugal blower fans — the same fans found in vacuum cleaners. These are high-RPM, high-noise motors optimised for short bursts of high static pressure. Luggable purifiers use Cooler Master Mobius PC fans instead — and the difference is profound.

Why PC fans change everything

PC fans are engineered by the computer industry to run continuously for 100,000+ hours (over 11 years non-stop) with minimal noise and minimal power draw. They operate on low-voltage DC power, making them exceptionally efficient. They are designed specifically for sustained airflow — exactly what air purification requires.

Cooler Master Mobius fans used in the Luggable Ultra XL are rated for high static pressure airflow — meaning they push air effectively through dense MERV13 filter media without the acoustic penalties of centrifugal blowers.

The Energy Star proof

Energy Star's 2026 "Most Efficient" designation is awarded only to products that score in the top tier on clean air delivered per watt — the definitive efficiency metric, published as the Integrated Energy Factor (IEF). The Luggable Ultra XL achieved an IEF of 26.2, tested by Intertek, which places it #1 of 247 certified air purifiers on the ENERGY STAR database.

For scale, the four best-known units we compare against score Blueair 14.0, Coway Airmega 10.2, Levoit Core 600S 6.0 and Winix Tower XQ 5.7. So the Luggable XL does between roughly twice and four and a half times the clean air per watt. Its own electricity comes to about £21 a year in the UK — around 6p a day.

CADR: the only air purifier metric that matters

CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate — measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM) of cleaned air. It is the single most important performance metric for an air purifier, because it tells you exactly how much air the unit actually cleans, not just how powerful the fan is.

How to size your purifier using CADR

The ASHRAE 241 standard (2023) for clean air in occupied spaces recommends 5 air changes per hour (ACH) for residential use. Here's how that translates to room coverage:

Room size Recommended CADR Luggable model
Bedroom (100–180 sq ft) 150–200 CFM Luggable (5-Fan)
Living room (200–350 sq ft) 250–350 CFM Luggable Ultra XL (7-fan)
Open-plan (350–600 sq ft) 350–500 CFM Luggable Ultra XL (7-fan)
Office / classroom 400–600 CFM Multiple Ultra XL units

A practical rule of thumb: one PC fan per room occupant. A 5-fan Luggable is ideal for a single person's bedroom; the 7-fan Ultra XL covers families and larger spaces.

The noise science: why 35dB is a breakthrough

Traditional HEPA air purifiers operate between 55–70dB at maximum speed — equivalent to a normal conversation or a vacuum cleaner in the next room. At medium speeds (where most people run them), they still produce 45–55dB. That's why so many users simply switch them off at night.

Luggables operate at 35dB at normal running speed — quieter than a library, quieter than a whisper. This isn't marketing language; it's a direct consequence of the PC fan design. Cooler Master Mobius fans are acoustically engineered with fluid dynamic bearings and anti-vibration mounts.

The practical benefit: you'll actually keep it running. An air purifier running at 35dB 24/7 delivers vastly more clean air than a 65dB machine switched off for 8 hours every night.

Independent validation

  • Energy Star Most Efficient 2026 — tested by Intertek Laboratories; IEF 26.2, #1 of 247 certified air purifiers
  • HouseFresh — independent air purifier review publication; reviewed Luggable performance across CADR, noise, and filter cost
  • EPA CR Box research — the design basis for Luggables; EPA tests confirm 97% bio-aerosol reduction in 30 minutes
  • 3M Filtrete MERV13 — independently MERV-rated filtration media; no proprietary claims

The adjustable speed control

Our optional 12V DC adjustable speed controller gives you fine-grained control of airflow — from "Whisper Mode" (25dB, barely perceptible) to "Boost Mode" (maximum CADR for rapid air cleaning). This lets you run at whisper speed during sleep and boost to maximum when cooking, having guests, or after outdoor activities on high-pollen days.
