What it costs you to run — UK

Electricity about £21 a year
Filters — one 20x25x1 pair from £58 a year
Together about £79 a year

Source: electricity from this model’s EPA ENERGY STAR certified listing — 81 kWh a year — at the October 2026 UK price cap of 26.32p per kWh. Filters at our own UK price.

Around 5p a day of electricity, plus genuine 3M Filtrete MERV-13 in a standard size you can buy anywhere — not a proprietary cartridge. In a consistently damp room, plan on changing filters closer to every six months.

Independently compared — HouseFresh

Yearly cost to run with filters included, not electricity alone. Damp needs a purifier you leave on, so this is the number that matters.

Model Electricity + filters, a year
Luggable XL Ultra $72.29
Levoit Vital 200S $121.45
Winix 5510 $166.51
AirFanta 3Pro $187.34

Over three years it comes out cheapest of the four even after the higher purchase price — paying that difference back in about 15 months against the Winix and the AirFanta.

Filtrete is made in the United States, so filters cost less there than here once shipping, duties and VAT are added — which is why our UK figure above is higher. That applies to every unit in the table, not only ours.

Damp rooms put mould spores into the air you breathe. A purifier will not dry out a wall — that needs fixing at the source — but it will capture the spores already airborne, so they are not circulating while you deal with the damp.

Why MERV-13 matters for mould

Mould spores are typically 3–100 microns. Our 3M Filtrete MERV-13 media captures around 93% of particles in that range, including spores, pollen, dust and smoke particles. It is the same grade of filtration specified in hospitals and schools.

The Luggable XL moves 622 m³/h of filtered air — enough to turn over the air in a large damp-prone room several times an hour, which is what keeps spore counts down.

Built to run continuously

Damp problems are constant, so the purifier has to be one you will actually leave on. The XL draws about 15 watts — around 5p a day of electricity. It runs at under 35 dB, quiet enough for a bedroom or a bathroom landing overnight.

Where people put them

Bathrooms and the landing outside them, basements and cellars, utility rooms, north-facing bedrooms, and rooms where washing is dried indoors — the places damp air collects.

Filters you can actually buy

The XL uses standard 20x25x1 3M Filtrete filters, not proprietary cartridges. Replace every 6–12 months; in a consistently damp room, closer to 6.

Frequently asked questions

Will an air purifier get rid of mould? No — and nobody should tell you it will. Mould grows because of moisture, and that has to be fixed at the source with ventilation, heating or repair. What a purifier does is capture the spores already in the air, which is worth doing while the underlying damp is being sorted.

Does it help with the damp smell? The MERV-13 units capture particles rather than odour molecules. For a musty smell, the Luggable Carbon adds activated carbon, which is what adsorbs odours.

Can I leave it on all the time? Yes — that is the point of the low power draw. At around 5p a day of electricity it costs less to run continuously than most people expect, and continuous running is what keeps airborne spore counts low.

What size do I need? The XL has a suggested room size of 516 sq ft (about 48 m²). For a single bathroom or small bedroom the 5-Fan Luggable is usually enough. Our room-sizing guide will tell you in seconds.
